Hangout Fest

The Hangout Festival was May 20-22 in Gulf Shores. It was my favorite festival last year because it was extremely laid-back and all the attendees had a “Relax, we’re on the beach!” outlook. This year was a much different experience for me. The main criticism was too many people, too little space. Because of its success in its first year, and a great lineup, 3 times the number of people attended Hangout this year.

Anyway, I won’t keep complaining about that, because I had an amazing time regardless.

FRIDAY

Warren Haynes played a great set - and Grace Potter came out for “Honkey Tonk Women.”

SATURDAY

The Flaming Lips is one of the only acts we were able to stay up close for. I’m so glad we did. They give so much energy through their music, Wayne Coyne, their Wizard of Oz characters and the creepy shots of a nude/half nude woman dancing onscreen behind them that the hour and a half set felt like 30 minutes. I even got to experience the huge plastic bubble up close.

SUNDAY

Of course for Galactic we had to be up front. They’re our boys! (Except they don’t know who we are, but that’s fine.) This wasn’t their usual set of songs from Ya-Ka-May. Galactic surprised us with some new stuff, but they still never fail to keep me dancing the whole set. Corey Glover sang a few songs with them and kept up the energy of the audience.

Paul Simon closed out the festival (I know - the picture’s awful). I’ve never seen Simon live before but even from far away he is so darn cute! A little pocket-sized singer/songwriter. He played a lot of songs from his newest album So Beautiful or So What, which Alex and I listened to on the way down to Gulf Shores. I think Simon was the perfect end to this year’s Fest: bubbly, beachy, dancy tunes with the occasional bongo breakdown. And fireworks to end it all.

The Hangout Fest was a great kickoff to my summer. I’m already looking forward to next year, not to mention I’m a little curious to see how organizers will handle the crowd in 2012.
